Welcome to Trajan's Roman Cavalry Site. The articles that you will find on the following pages will I hope give you an insight regarding current understanding of the Roman Cavalry. They are my own views and do not necessarily reflect the views of any organisation. I have participated in Roman Cavalry living history displays for over 7 years and in that time I have learnt a great deal of information about the use of the Roman Cavalry saddle, and the various amounts of equipment that was carried by the Cavalryman. In my displays which I attend at various historical sites around the country, I try to give as accurate picture as possible as to how the Roman Cavalryman and his mount would have looked. For my mount I use a 14.1 hands high (57 inches high) Connemara native pony. This native pony is the exact type and height used by the Romans in this country. He is also unshod (without shoes), just as his predecessors would have been.
I have worked with equines from a young age and participated in medieval jousting tournaments for 8 years and English Civil War events for 3 years.
